Body-Based Stress & Trauma Responses
Trauma and chronic stress often affect the body as much as the mind. Adults and children who have experienced overwhelming or challenging events may notice a variety of physical or somatic symptoms. Common experiences include:
Persistent muscle tension or aches
Chronic fatigue or low energy
Headaches or migraines
Digestive issues or stomach discomfort
Sleep difficulties, such as insomnia or restless sleep
Feeling constantly “on edge,” hyper-alert, or restless
These experiences are not signs of weakness, they are the body’s natural response to situations that felt unsafe, unpredictable, or overwhelming. Trauma can influence the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the body’s fight/flight and rest/digest responses. The sympathetic system (fight/flight) can remain overactive, while the parasympathetic system (rest/digest) may underperform. This imbalance can make it difficult to relax, feel safe, or recover fully after stress.
Research shows that these body-based responses can persist long after the traumatic or stressful event has passed, particularly when trauma has been repetitive, chronic, or occurred during key developmental periods. Over time, ongoing physical tension, hyperarousal, or fatigue can interfere with daily life, including energy, focus, emotional regulation, and engagement with work, school, or relationships.
Body-based symptoms often occur alongside emotional dysregulation and negative self-beliefs, highlighting the interconnected nature of physical, emotional, and cognitive responses to trauma. For example, chronic tension or digestive discomfort can amplify feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or low self-worth, creating a cycle that is difficult to manage without support.
