Trauma & Difficult Experiences
Trauma is a response to experiences that feel overwhelming, distressing, or difficult to cope with at the time they occur.
It does not need to come from extreme or life-threatening events. Trauma can also develop from ongoing stress, relational difficulties, significant life changes, loss, or experiences where a person feels unsafe, unsupported, or powerless.
What matters is not the event itself, but how it is experienced and how it impacts a person’s sense of safety, wellbeing, and ability to cope.
Experiences of trauma or adverse situations—whether from early life, accidents, illness, loss, abuse, neglect, war, or other distressing events—can leave lasting marks on the mind, body, and emotions. These experiences can shape the way people relate to themselves, the world, and others:
Relating to self: Feeling unworthy, overly self-critical, or carrying shame, guilt, or low self-esteem.
Relating to the world: Feeling unsafe, hyper-alert, or expecting danger, disappointment, or loss.
Relating to others: Struggling to trust, fearing rejection, or finding it hard to form close, secure, and supportive relationships.
Other common effects include strong emotional reactions, difficulty managing feelings, stress-related physical symptoms, or patterns of avoidance and hypervigilance. Trauma can also affect confidence, decision-making, and the ability to engage fully in everyday life.
Our brains naturally want to heal, but trauma or adverse experiences can interrupt this process. Sometimes memories, emotions, and physical sensations become “stuck,” replaying long after the danger has passed. This can appear as:
Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts
Nightmares or disrupted sleep
Persistent feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or tension
Over time, these stuck experiences can influence self-perception, relationships, and daily functioning, making it hard to feel safe, relaxed, or fully present in the moment.
